Vol. 290 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Industry Employment.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons employed in the private sector of the building industry in February, 1975, and February, 1976, and the change, actual and as a percentage, in that period.

The information available relates to the monthly index of employment in the private, that is, non-State sector of the building industry. On the basis of this index, which is estimated from monthly returns furnished by a sample of building firms, it is estimated that the number of persons engaged in this sector of the building industry declined from about 57.9 thousand in February, 1975, to about 49.4 thousand in February, 1976. This represents a fall of 8.5 thousand or 14.7 per cent in that period.
