Vol. 300 No. 1

Election of Ceann Comhairle.

Cléireach na Dála

Sé an chéad ghnó eile ná Ceann Comhairle a thoghadh. Glacfaidh mé anois le tairisointí. In accordance with Standing Orders, the next business is the election of a Ceann Comhairle, and I shall now receive motions.

Tairgim go dtoghfar an Teachta Seósamh Ó Braonáin agus go rachaidh sé i gceannas na Dála anois mar Cheann Comhairle. I move that Deputy Joseph Brennan be elected to take the Chair of the Dáil as Ceann Comhairle.

Cuidím leis an rún sin. I second that motion.

During the past 45 years it has been the practice, save on two occasions when incoming Fianna Fáil Governments chose not to maintain in the Chair an outgoing Ceann Comhairle who was a member of that party, for the outgoing Ceann Comhairle to be re-elected. In accordance with this precedent, therefore, I propose the outgoing Ceann Comhairle, Deputy Seán Treacy.

It gives me great pleasure to second the nomination of Deputy Seán Treacy as Ceann Comhairle. As the proposer has said, it has been a long-standing practice not to have a vote for the position of Ceann Comhairle. The outgoing Ceann Comhairle has carried out his duties with dignity and impartiality.

Cléireach na Dála

Tá mé ag cur na ceiste go dtoghfar an Teachta Seósamh Ó Braonáin agus go rachaidh sé i gceannas na Dála anois mar Cheann Comhairle. I am putting the question that Deputy Joseph Brennan be elected and do now take the Chair of the Dáil as Ceann Comhairle.

Cléireach na Dála

Iarraim anois ar an Teachta Seosamh Ó Braonáin, comhalta do Dháil Ceantar Dún na nGall, dul i gceannas an 21ú Dáil Éireann. I now call on Deputy Joseph Brennan, Member for the constituency of Donegal, to take the Chair of this 21st Dáil Éireann.

Whereupon Members rose in their places and remained standing while the Ceann Comhairle proceeded to the Dais.

Standing beside the Chair, the Ceann Comhairle, addressing the Dáil said:

Tá mé buíoch daoibh mé a thoghadh anseo inniu mar Cheann Comhairle ar Dháil Éireann. Is mór an onóir é sin. Le comhoibriú ó na Teachtaí go léir bhéarfaidh mé mo gheallúint daoibh go dtabharfaidh mé cothrom na Féinne do gach duine i gcónaí. Chuige sin tá mé le dúthracht ag iarraidh cabhair agus comhoibriú oraibh uilig. Is é mo ghuí go mbeidh rath Dé ar ár gcuid saothair.

Deputies, I am greatly honoured by the confidence you have reposed in me by electing me to the high office of Ceann Comhairle. It will be my primary aim to discharge my duties with absolute impartiality and fairness in the tradition of my predecessors. Your help and co-operation, which I expect will be readily forthcoming, will be greatly appreciated in this respect. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.
