asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he will state each price increase that has been approved since the publication of the last NPC Report, and in each case (a) the date of approval; (b) the amount of the increase; and (c) if the NPC requested their consultants or other independent body to examine the reasons for the increase.
Written Answers. - Price Increases.
The last report of the National Prices Commission to be published was that for November 1977 which was published on 13 January 1978 and contained details of price increase proposals on which the commission made recommendations during the period 26 October 1977 to 22 November 1977. The information requested by the Deputy, therefore, covers the period 23 November 1977 to 3 March 1978. During this period, two applications were referred by the commission to their consultancy unit for examination, while no applications were referred to outside consultants. All other applications were examined in detail in the prices division of my Department to ensure that only vouched unavoidable cost increases were allowed for compensatory price increases. As the remainder of the information requested by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.
