Vol. 304 No. 9

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Anti-Terror Squad.

359.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give further details regarding the proposed anti-terror squad within the Garda Síochána; the appropriate number to man such a squad; the proposed duties; when special training will commence; how selections will be made for the proposed courses; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda Síochána are in the process of setting up a special unit which will comprise up to about 40 members of the force to enable them to be in a position to deal more effectively with any crimes requiring a special response such as hijackings or the taking of hostages.

The selection of personnel for the unit is a matter of internal Garda administration.

Training will commence in the near future and may include training abroad. The intention is that on completion of their training the members of the unit will return to their ordinary duties but will be recalled for refresher courses from time to time. Members will be available to be called together at short ntoice to deal with any serious situation in which their special training would be needed.
