Vol. 304 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Evasion.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the allegation on 26 January 1978 by a member of the British House of Commons that Irish banks operating in Britain are being used illegally for tax evasion and that Irish residents may be utilising British banks operating in Ireland in a similar way; and if he will take steps to investigate the accuracy of these allegations.

I have seen a newspaper report of the allegation in question. As regards the suggestion that Irish residents may be utilising in a similar way British banks operating in Ireland, I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they are aware of this method of evading tax and that their anti-evasion measures take account of this possibility as well as the various other methods of evasion which may be practised.
