16.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of vacancies for apprentice fitters recently advertised by the Office of Public Works; the number of replies received; and the total number of applicants interviewed.

Three vacancies for apprentice fitter/turners and one for an apprentice metal fabricator were advertised in November 1977. Applications were received from 304 candidates, 135 of whom were called for interview. One hundred and twenty-four attended and were interviewed.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of apprentices taken on by the Office of Public Works in each of the past four years; and the trades for which they were accepted.

No apprentices were taken on in the calendar years 1974 and 1975. In 1976 one apprentice bricklayer was recruited and in 1977 four apprentices namely one electrician, one cabinet maker, one plumber and one carpenter were taken on. So far in 1978 one cabinet maker has been taken on and within a matter of weeks a further 36 apprentices will be appointed.
