Vol. 305 No. 9

Written Answers. - Public Transport Expansion.

365.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps he is taking to ensure the co-ordination of the provision of public transport and other related facilities with the expansion of existing urban areas.

366.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has been in contact with CIE regarding their proposals for the extension of the public transport system into areas of Dublin county which are now subject to development as outlined in the county's development plan.

367.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has been in contact in any way with CIE regarding their proposals for the provision of public transport in the Dublin area and its relationship to the Dublin city development plan.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 365, 366 and 367 together.

Consultation on the provision of public transport services in relation to urban expansion and development plans is a function of the local authority concerned in any particular instance, and not for me. Such consultation as CIE seeks directly with my Department arises normally in connection with the provisions of the Road Traffic Acts which govern vehicle standards and the safety of vehicles generally and not with the provision of services. CIE was represented, as was my Department, in the groups involved in preparing the Dublin Transportation Study for the represented also in the current Land Use/Transportation Study for the Cork area. I might add that CIE is also represented on the Dublin Corporation Traffic Study Group, as is my Department. This group considers questions relating to traffic control generally in the city including operation of public transport services.
