Vol. 309 No. 3

Written Answers. - “Guaranteed Irish” Labels.

446.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he is aware of any instances of the abuse of the "Guaranteed Irish" label by the display thereof on goods not manufactured in Ireland; and the steps he will take to prevent such abuse.

Instances of alleged misuse of the "Guaranteed Irish" symbol are brought to the attention of the Irish Goods Council from time to time. The Irish Goods Council also carries out frequent sample checks on the use of the symbol. Since the inception of the scheme there have been some 50 complaints, mainly from competitor firms, of alleged misuse and, of this number, seven cases have been confirmed and the manufacturer in each case compelled to cease use of the symbol.

If the Deputy is aware of a case of the abuse of the symbol by a particular manufacturer and he gives me the name and address of the firm concerned, I will have the matter fully investigated.
