With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 447 to 450, inclusive, together.

The term "number of cases listed" merely represents the number of the cases that are awaiting a hearing which an experienced court officer considers may be expected to be reached during a High Court sitting. It does not represent the number of cases awaiting hearing. Statistics showing the number of cases awaiting a hearing on, say, 1 January in each of the years referred to in the questions are not readily available. The current number of such cases is 366.

The following table gives the number of cases disposed of either by jury verdict or by ruling of settlements in each of the years in question:

Year

Cases Disposed of

1973

143

1974

193

1975

196

1976

221

1977

254

1978

305

The number of cases heard by the High Court on appeal from the Circuit Court in Cork during the years 1973 to 1978, inclusive, were as follows:

1973—26; 1974—21; 1975—42; 1976—45; 1977—25; 1978—21.

The information sought in Question No. 450 is not readily available and could not be specially compiled without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time.

It is assumed that Question No. 448 refers to High Court cases.
