The number of persons in custody in the prisons and places of detention on 25 December 1978 will depend on the number of persons who, in accordance with the usual practice, are released for a short period to enable them to spend Christmas with their families or who will be given some extra remission of their sentence to enable their outright release to take place just before rather than just after Christmas. As applications for release on that basis are still under consideration, an accurate estimate of the number who will remain in custody on 25 December 1978 cannot be given at this stage.
