Three vehicles were hired in 1978 for the transport of staff to and from isolated working locations in areas where public transport is unavailable. The net cost was £4,167.51.

Apart from vehicles hired during the Christmas pressure period, the average number of vehicles on hire by my Department each month during 1978 varied between 63 and 125 and the cost of hiring for the year was £167,000 approximately. Fifty-five vehicles were hired for the Christmas period at a cost of £9,000 approximately.

My Department do not hire vehicles on a contract basis. Cars are however hired on an ad hoc basis, as necessary, mainly for protocal purposes. In 1978, cars were hired on approximately 660 occasions at a cost of £17,000.

Following is the information requested: The number of occasions on which vehicles were hired by the Department during 1978 was 39 at a cost of £85.12. The vehicles were hired for the transport of documents, the movement of which could not be catered for by the normal messenger service.
It is assumed that the Deputy does not refer to the hiring of taxis by individual officers for official journeys, the cost of which they may recoup from public funds in accordance with existing official travel and subsistence arrangements.
