Vol. 312 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Museum Services.

38.

asked the Minister for Education if the National Museum has made a cast of an Ogham stone in its collection for a private individual (details supplied); the date on which such a cast was requested; the date on which it was delivered; the cost to public funds; if any part of the cost to the public funds was reimbursed by the private individual concerned, and if so, when such payment was made; and if it is normal practice for the museum to carry out such services for private individuals.

To the first part of the question, it can be stated that no cast has been made of any Ogham stone in the collection of the National Museum.

The rest of the question does not, therefore, arise.

Can the Minister say whether a cast of any object in the museum has been made for the person named in the question?

If the Deputy is referring to the Killycluggin stone, I know that the parish of Templeport has asked me to get a cast made of the Killycluggin stone to be put back in the place from which it was removed. I was also asked by Fr. Gallogley of the Breffni Historical Society to have that done. I have asked the Director of the National Museum to make the cast and make it available so that it can be placed in the location from which the original stone was removed by the National Museum. The locals requested that the stone itself should be replaced where it was originally but we can come to an arrangement to have a fibreglass cast made.

Is the Minister giving the House an assurance that no cast of any object in the museum was made for the individual mentioned in the question?

My answer states that no cast has been made of any Ogham stone in the collection of the National Museum.

The Minister is not giving the assurance that I asked for in the supplementary.

I am not giving an assurance that the Killycluggin stone cast will not be made.

The Minister knows that I am not talking about the Killycluggin stone.
