Vol. 312 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rape Cases.

13.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of rape cases reported to the Garda in the year 1978 with comparative figures for the previous two years.

The figures requested are: 1976, 32; 1977, 60; 1978, 48.

Is the Minister prepared to comment in any way or indicate that he will issue a response to the submission of the Council for the Status of Women in regard to this problem?

I could reply that that is a separate question but I might as well tell the Deputy, as I told the House on 14 February last, I am having this matter examined in the light of a submission made to me by the Council for the Status of Women. I have consulted persons experienced in the practical operation of the law and I have received a number of documents in the matter. Some of them contain conflicting views on how the matter should best be tackled. I intend giving them the fullest consideration before recommending a course of action to the Government.

Will the Minister confirm, first, that he will come to some decision shortly and, secondly, that he will implement that decision in the near future?

The Deputy is taking the matter outside the scope of the question. He need not have any fears on the matter. A decision will be arrived at when the matter is carefully and properly considered——

How long will that take?

It will take the least amount of time possible. Then whatever course of action that is necessary will be taken.

What does that mean? It sounds very nice but I do not know what it means.

It means nothing will be done.

The Minister should tell us about the situation in plain English.

(Cavan-Monaghan): A question for written reply could be put down.

I am calling Question No. 14.
