Vol. 316 No. 3

Written Answers. - Free Medical Care for Asthmatics.

431.

asked the Minister for Health if people suffering from asthma are eligible for free medical care under the provisions of the Health Acts.

Persons suffering from asthma who are medical card holders are entitled to free medical care both at hospital and general practitioner level. Other persons are entitled to free hospital care, expect for consultants' fees in some cases, and to a drug subsidy scheme which ensures that the cost to the individual of prescribed drugs will not exceed £6.50 in a month.

I have recommended to the chief executive officers of the health boards that they should take fully into account the special position of applicants for medical cards who indicate that they suffer from asthma.
