Vol. 316 No. 8

Written Answers. - River Liffey Salmon Stock.

390.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the plans, if any, in hand to preserve and increase the salmon stock in the River Liffey, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Because of the very serious decline in our salmon stocks in recent years, I introduced in 1979 additional stringent salmon conservation measures aimed at facilitating the escape of greater numbers of salmon to the spawning beds in freshwater. These measures are designed to benefit the salmon stocks in all our inland and coastal waters including the River Liffey. In addition, the upper reaches of the Liffey catchment are restocked with eyed salmon ova on a regular basis by the Electricity Supply Board.
