Vol. 316 No. 9

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: Nos. 3, 8 and 9. Private Members' Business from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., No. 72 by agreement.

Would the Tánaiste tell me if time will be given to discuss the tobacco regulations?

I am not sure that the regulations would call for such, but I can check on it and let the Deputy know.

Deputy Barry Desmond and I put down a motion today that the regulations be annulled and it is usual in situations like that for Government time to be given to debate it.

I will look into the matter.

Can the Tánaiste tell the House when the Committee Stage of the Safety in Industry Bill will be reached? I raised this question with the Taoiseach two weeks ago and the disaster in Canada highlights the need for the speedy passage of this Bill.

The Deputy can take it that in discussions between the Whips if any effort can be made to expedite one piece of business over another this will be done but it is a matter for discussion between the whips.

I raised this matter at least four or five times. The Second Stage of this Bill was taken well over a year ago. Are we to wait for a disaster like that which occurred in Mississauga, Canada, before we do anything?

If the Deputy will raise that with his own Whip I will be glad to take it up with him.
