Vol. 318 No. 2

Written Answers. - Employment of Estate Agents.

387.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement outlining his views on the employment of estate agents and auctioneers as managers or officials of building societies in branches around the country and if consideration is given to such criteria when application for licences for such commercial enterprises are sought.

The employment of estate agents and auctioneers as managers and officials of building society branches is a matter for the board of each particular society. Societies who make such arrangements are presumably satisfied from their experience that the arrangements enable an economic service to be provided locally. I have not received any representations which would indicate public dissatisfaction on this issue, but if the Deputy has a particular complaint I will be glad to take it up with the society concerned.

The licensing of auctioneers and estate agents is a matter for the Minister for Justice under the Auctioneers and House Agents Acts, 1947 to 1973.
