Vol. 318 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fireplace Installation.

13.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in the case of centrally heated houses occupied by local authority tenants, it is proposed to make sufficient funds available to local councils to enable the councils to undertake installation of fireplaces as soon as possible, without cost to the tenants.

The general question of the carrying out of schemes of improvement works to rented local authority houses, including the installation of fireplaces in centrally heated houses, is under active consideration in my Department. I hope to be in a position shortly to announce proposals to alleviate the problems.

Has consideration been given to the type of fireplace and particularly the need for back boilers in such fireplaces? The Minister may not be aware that in the past fireplaces were installed without those back boilers and were not fully effective.

All that will be looked into.

Are those proposals being put forward?

They will be announced in due course.
