Vol. 318 No. 7

Written Answers. - Teachers' Pay Claims.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the various teacher unions' claims in respect of increased salary and better working conditions, if he intends to set up a review body to examine these claims and if he will make a statement on the matter.

46.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the up-to-date position regarding the teachers' pay review tribunal.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 and 46 together.

Claims in 1979 relating to the salaries of teachers in national, secondary, vocational, comprehensive and community schools and related matters have been dealt with under the conciliation and arbitration scheme for teachers.

The proceedings under the scheme are confidential. Accordingly, it would not be appropriate for me to list such claims for increases in salaries as may have been submitted by the teachers' organisations for consideration at the conciliation council or the arbitration board, or to make any statement in regard to them.

As already announced by me on 29 January last, the Government have decided, in principle to establish a review body on teachers' pay and conditions. Arrangements are being made at present for this purpose. I do not consider that it would be appropriate for me to make any more detailed statement in relation to the matter at this stage.
