Vol. 318 No. 7

Written Answers. - University Student Places.

66.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of public money provided by way of capital for new building in each university college over the past five years; the number of additional student places, if any, provided in each college over the same period; and the average capital cost for buildings of each additional place so provided in each college.

The amount of money provided from the Vote for Higher Education for new buildings in each of the university colleges over the last five years has been as follows: UCD, £2,993,218; UCC, £3,949,318; UCG, £4,109,652; TCD, £7,527,534; St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, £1,323,490.

In addition, amounts of approximately £4 million for a new faculty of Agriculture building at UCD and a further £4 million approximately for a new dairy and food science building at UCC were provided from the Vote for Agriculture within the same period.

Most of the accommodation provided related to existing student places. Additional places provided were as follows: UCD, 170; UCC, 221; UCG, Nil; TCD, 750; St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, 400.

As the expenditure in question was not wholly related to the provision of additional places but included new accommodation for existing numbers as well as common and ancillary facilities, it is not feasible to express the expenditure in terms of average cost for building of each additional place provided in each college.
