Vol. 318 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Galway School Transport.

82.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that children from Derrybrien area of County Galway attending post-primary schools in Gort, County Galway are collected at 7.45 a.m. and do not return home until after 6 p.m. and if he will arrange more suitable transport for these children.

The school bus which caters for the Derrybrien children is also required to operate another route to bring pupils to Gort post-primary centre. The standard of service provided is regarded as reasonably adequate. The making of alternative arrangements for these pupils which would not adversely affect the other pupils being conveyed, would involve additional expenditure which would not be warranted.

83.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the need for an additional pickup point at Crowes shop. Brierfield, Ballinasloe, County Galway for children attending post primary schools in Tuam, County Galway and if he will make the necessary adjustment in the transport arrangements.

As the district in question lies within the Mountbellew-Castleblakeney catchment area, which has a fully adequate post-primary centre, it is regretted that it is not possible to accede to the application.

84.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the unsatisfactory primary school transport arrangements that exist in relation to the children of Derrawee, Derrybrien, County Galway now attending Derrybrien national school and who live five miles from the school and if he will make the necessary arrangements to have a transport service provided for these children.

I understand that these children live in the area of the former Gortaraha school which was amalgamated with Flagmount NS. They are therefore eligible for free transport to Flagmount NS and may be facilitated on the service to that school if they wish to avail themselves of it.
