Vol. 319 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Imports.

19.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the amount of salmon imported into Ireland since 1 January 1980 and the countries of origin.

The amount of salmon imported into Ireland since 1 January 1980 was 10,176 lbs comprising 4,906 lbs from Britain, 3,030 lbs from Northern Ireland and 2,240 lbs from Canada.

Is the Minister aware that our cold stores are full of salmon at the moment? Can he give an assurance to the House that a floor price will be set for salmon for 1980 because it is estimated that the price of salmon could be at an all-time low——

That is a separate question. Question No. 19 relates to the amount of salmon imported into Ireland.

It is a matter of supply and demand. There would appear to be a greater number of salmon this year.

With regard to fresh salmon, can the Minister give the House a commitment to have a floor price for fresh salmon this year?

There is nothing in the question about price.

It is a simple question.

It may be simple but it is not in order to ask a question that is not related to the question on the Order Paper. I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that the Chair cannot allow that.

The price of salmon during 1980 will be raised in this House on many occasions if a floor price is not introduced.

If the Deputy will put down a specific question I will be glad to answer it.
