Vol. 321 No. 5

Private Notice Questions. - Waterford Factory Closure.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism if, in view of the imminent closure of National Corrugated Products Ltd, Granagh, Waterford and the possible loss of employment of over 180 people, he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the closure of the company in question is being considered by the board of the company and I am advised that a final decision has not yet been taken.

In view of the substantial State investment of nearly £200,000 by the IDA and possibly other State funds and in view of the large number of employees, about 180 most of whom are married men, will the Minister take an interest in this matter and ensure that a statement is forthcoming on the future of this important factory for Waterford?

This matter first came to the attention of my Department on Friday of last week. Since then, even this morning, there were meetings with the IDA at which representatives from my Department were present and the matter is under consideration.

Will the Minister say when a decision will be forthcoming and if he intends to get involved in the matter with a view to ensuring that this factory continues to operate and will reopen as soon as possible?

The Deputy is repeating himself.

Is the Minister aware that while there was a trade dispute there the union involved, the Irish Transport and General Workers Union, decided to resume normal work? In view of that will the Minister make inquiries and let me know the outcome?

In the final analysis the decision as to whether a company remains in business or not is strictly a matter for the board of that company. However, when this matter came to our attention last Friday immediate action was taken. A number of meetings were held, the latest of which was this morning when the meeting concluded at lunch time. I am aware that there was an unofficial dispute, that the workers had intended to go back on Friday last and that the board of the company had indicated that at this stage they are not prepared to reopen the plant. No final decision has been taken with regard to the closure and the matter is receiving hourly attention.

Would the Minister be——

A Private Notice Question does not confer any special powers on the person who asks it.

One final question. Would the Minister be prepared to meet a small deputation from the workers side on this matter and public representatives?

I am always available to meet deputations and there is no reason why I would not in this case.
