Vol. 322 No. 6

Private Notice Question. - Waterford Post Office Strike.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the inconvenience and hardship caused by the lightning strike by the Post Office workers in Waterford city, he will state the action he is taking to resolve the dispute.

I very much regret the inconvenience and hardship being caused by the unofficial industrial action by postman staff at Waterford. My Department have been in constant touch with the Post Office Workers' Union in the matter. I understand that the union have called on the staff concerned to resume normal working and that representatives of the national executive of the union are in Waterford today in an effort to secure an immediate resumption of work.

Is the Minister satisfied that this action will result in a resumption of work today? If not, what other procedures does he intend to bring into play to ensure a resumption of work?

I hope that the presence of the National Executive of the Union in Waterford today will result in a resumption of work.

If that does not happen, what other action does the Minister intend to take?

I will take every action open to me to ensure an early resumption of normal working in Waterford.

Without delay?
