Vol. 322 No. 11

Written Answers. - School for Hearing-Impaired Children.

103.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any proposals for the building of a special school for children with impaired hearing in Dublin; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the implications for other such schools in Dublin and throughout the country.

My Department have sanctioned grants for two building projects for hearing-impaired children in Dublin. 1. A special school at Cabra for hard of hearing and language disordered pupils attending St. Joseph's school for the Hearing Impaired. The school is to replace existing accommodation which is very much out of date. 2. A special school at St. Mary's Cabra, for hearing-impaired children with additional handicaps. This school is being provided in response to a recommendation from the Advisory Committee on the Education of the Hearing Impaired. It is to concentrate the special expertise needed to educate these children in one location.

Approval for these projects did not imply any disturbance of the existing arrangements in the case of other schools in Dublin and throughout the country.
