Vol. 322 No. 11

Written Answers. - Dublin Archaeological Site.

101.

asked the Minister for Education when, and in what circumstances, the archaeological finds at Wood Quay, Dublin, will be put on public display.

Some finds from Wood Quay on which conservation has been carried out have already been placed on exhibition in the Viking-Medieval Exhibition in the National Museum premises at 7-8 Merrion Row. It is intended that further finds will be placed on display after initial documentation and research on the material has been carried out.

It is anticipated that a considerable body of material will eventually be exhibited in the proposed museum and exhibition areas to be incorporated in the Civic Offices of Dublin Corporation.

andMr. Griffin asked the Minister for Education if the Director and staff of the National Museum are satisfied with the steps being taken by Dublin Corporation to preserve the national monument at Wood Quay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Commissioners of Public Works and Dublin Corporation, in exercise of the powers vested in them jointly by virtue of section 14 of the National Monuments Act, 1930, agreed to authorise the National Museum to engage in archaeological excavation of the Wood Quay site. The National Museum is conducting the excavations under the terms of a licence issued by the commissioners. I am satisfied that the National Museum is discharging its obligations in the matter in a satisfactory manner.
