Written Answers . - Dublin Vandalism .

339.

asked the Minister for Justice the action he proposes to take to curb the amount of vandalism in the Seville Place area of Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

340.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the problems being experienced by companies in the Seville Place area of Dublin because of attacks on their premises and vandalism; if so, the action he proposes to take; and if he will receive a deputation from the commercial interests in the area.

: With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 339 and 340 together.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that complaints have been received on behalf of companies in Seville Place about attacks on their premises and general vandalism in the area. I have also received representations on behalf of one firm in the area.

The complaints have been investigated by the Garda and arrangements have been made for more concentrated patrolling of the area on a 24-hour basis by foot and mobile patrols; the patrols have been instructed to pay particular attention to the vicinities of the affected premises. Garda Inspectors have been instructed to monitor the patrols and ensure that policing arrangements for the area are such as to maximise Garda efficiency.

Local Garda officers have been in touch with the management personnel of the companies concerned on a number of occasions about their problems. In addition to increasing police activity in the area, the Garda have also suggested certain ways in which the companies themselves could help to alleviate problems. A member has been briefed to maintain contact with the companies. The Garda are also very committed to helping the youth in the area and fostering good community relations.

The policing needs of the area are being kept under constant review and will be considered further according as additional manpower becomes available. In the circumstances outlined, I do not consider that a meeting with representatives of local commercial interests would serve any useful purpose at this stage.
