Vol. 323 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - County Waterford Vandalism .

30.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the increase in vandalism in Portlaw and surrounding areas in County Waterford; if he will take steps to increase the permanent strength of the Garda force in Portlaw station; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: The Garda authorities report that every effort is being made to deal with the incidence of vandalism in the Portlaw area. I understand that detections have been made in respect of the acts of vandalism committed in the area in recent months and that proceedings in the matter are being instituted against a number of persons.

As regards the Garda strength at Portlaw, I am informed by the Garda authorities that an additional garda was allocated to Portlaw station on 14 October 1980 and that the police needs of the Portlaw area and of the Waterford/Kilkenny Division generally will be further considered according as the additional members being recruited become available for assignment to the various centres.
