A number of research and management studies on grouse populations have been undertaken and it has been shown that a sustained programme of heather management by strip burning will improve grouse numbers. Grants were made available to regional game councils where affiliated gun clubs undertook heather management in the interests of grouse. The grant was availed of only to a limited extent.
