Vol. 325 No. 7

Written Answers. - Seal Survey.

396.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the results of the survey carried out by his Department on the number of seals on the west coast; if he will give details of how this survey was carried out and his Department's proposals as a result of the findings.

A survey of grey seals in breeding grounds in the sea area extending from the Foyle Estuary to Slyne Head, County Galway, was carried out in October-November 1980. A preliminary reading of the survey report shows an estimated population of 1,200 to 1,600 grey seals in the area.

The survey was carried out by means of both aerial sightings and small boats supported by a fishing boat. Steps were taken to avoid any duplication in counting. The detailed report of the survey is at present being analysed in my Department to see what further studies of the species may be required.
