Vol. 327 No. 10

Social Welfare (Amendment) Bill, 1981: Fifth Stage.

Question Proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

The Bill is an attempt to meet the demands of society at present. There are still, deeply embedded in the Bill, blatant discriminations against married women. I have referred to them earlier and I ask the Minister to take serious account of the position. Maybe it is not in order to develop this argument now. Perhaps I should talk to the Minister privately about it. In going through the Bill, I have come across some evidence of terrible discrimination, for example, a married woman is only entitled to 312 day's benefit, while a single man, a widow or a single mum is entitled to 390 days.

The Deputy should raise this at some other stage. It is not in the Bill. We can deal only with what is in the Bill.

I appreciate that. I do not want to hold up the business of the House. I accept the Bill.

I hope the Deputy appreciates that we are bringing in an important maternity scheme in the Bill.

Question put and agreed to.
