Vol. 333 No. 8

Written Answers. - Industrial Development Authority.

922.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy (a) the amount provided for the Industrial Development Authority last year; (b) the amount spent; (c) the number of permanent jobs created by the IDA over the past decade; and (d) the average cost of each job.

The reply to part (a) of the Deputy's question is as follows:

Subhead S1— Administration and General expenses

Grant-in-aid

£12,359,000

Expenditure

£20,698,000

Subhead S2— Grant to Industry

Grant-in-aid

£133,250,000

Expenditure

£136,050,000

Subhead S3— Building Operations

Grant-in-aid

£56,800,000

Expenditure

£78,700,000

Subhead S4— Industrial Housing

Grant-in-aid

£643,300

Expenditure

£643,300

The expenditure figures shown above are only estimated as the Industrial Development Authority accounts for 1981 have not yet been audited. The difference between the expenditure and grant-in-aid is due to income which the IDA receives from non-Exchequer sources.

With regard to Part (b) of the Deputy's question, I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that it has estimated that between 1973, when it commenced its annual manufacturing employment survey and 1981, 71,000 jobs, which still exist, were created in IDA grant-aided new industry and small industry.

With regard to Part (c) of the Deputy's question, the latest information available to me shows that the grant cost per job sustained in the period 1973 — 1980 was approximately £9,000 at 1980 prices.
