asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in restoring a telephone service to a person (details supplied) in Dublin: and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The fault, which is in the underground cable, will be repaired within the next few days. Because of the number of such faults, which require attention by specially trained staff, I regret that there has been delay in repairing them.

Service will be restored within the next few days. There has been a high incidence of faults on the line in recent months mainly in the underground cable. The current fault is also in the underground cable. Because of the number of such faults, which require attention by specially trained staff, I regret that there has been delay in repairing them.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in connecting a telephone for a person (details supplied) in Dublin; when the connection will be made; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It has not been possible to provide telephone service for the person named so far because there is no suitable cable pair available. A special examination is being carried out to see if service can be provided quickly.

When advance payment was collected it was expected that service would be provided within about three months. It transpired subsequently that the cable pair which had been reserved was not suitable for the address.

A refund of the advance payment was offered to the applicant in June 1981 together with an assurance that acceptance of the offer would not add to the time taken to provide service. The offer was not accepted.

It has not been possible to provide service for the person named so far because the cable was found to be faulty at the installation stage. It is expected that service will be provided in about a month.
