Vol. 334 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Dental Treatment Applicant.

13.

asked the Minister for Health when a person (details supplied) in Dublin will receive the dental treatment which he needs urgently.

The person referred to in the question, who is a juvenile, requires orthodontic treatment. In Dublin this is provided for eligible persons in two ways. Some patients are treated by the health board's whole-time dentists, usually following examination and the drawing up of a treatment plan in respect of the patient by a visiting specialist orthodontist. Other patients, including those requiring the more difficult forms of treatment, are referred to the Dublin Dental Hospital.

A health board dentist examined the child in question and discussed with a parent possible courses of treatment to help rectify the orthodontic condition. He took impressions of the mouth with a view to studying the case further and possibly seeking consultation with a visiting specialist orthodontist. However, the parent subsequently indicated that she did not wish to pursue this course of action and wanted the child treated at the Dublin Dental Hospital. The child's name was therefore placed on the waiting list for treatment in the Dublin Dental Hospital. This list is, however, extensive and it is not possible at this stage to say when treatment will commence.

Can the Minister tell the House how many children are presently on the list in respect of the Dublin Dental Hospital?

That is a separate question and that statistical information is not here. There is a need for extended facilities there and there is a plan to build a new dental hospital at St. James's Hospital which is well under way.

Can the Minister indicate what the position is in general in Dublin in relation to the provision of orthodontic treatment? Can he indicate that there is a post for a specialist orthodontist advertised? What is the position in relation to that post? When will it be filled?

I am going ahead with the appointment of five additional orthodontists throughout the country. One of these will be in the Dublin area.

Can the Minister indicate——

I have allowed a lot of latitude. We have had replies to only 13 questions so far. I have allowed the Deputy three supplementaries. Question No. 14.
