Vol. 334 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cleft Lip and Palate.

713.

asked the Minister for Health the number of births in 1980 and 1981 with cleft lip and palate; and where the five centres for the treatment of this complaint are located.

There is no information available as to the number of babies born with cleft lip and palate. It is estimated, however, that the condition occurs once in every 700 to 750 live births and on the basis of the current birth statistics this would indicate that approximately 100 babies are born with the condition every year.

The five centres for treatment of this complaint are as follows: Dr. Steeven's Hospital, Dublin; Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin; The Children's Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin; Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth; St. Finbarr's Hospital, Cork.
