Vol. 335 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inter-denominational Education.

884.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the difficulties faced by lay organisations in establishing national schools to provide education on an inter-denominational basis; and, if so, the steps that will be taken to ease these difficulties.

885.

asked the Minister for Education if the establishment of schools on an inter-denominational basis is in the public interest.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 884 and 885 together.

I believe that it is desirable, so far as is possible, that parents should have available to them the type of education they would wish for their children.

I am satisfied that the existing arrangements for the establishment of national schools, including inter-denominational schools, are suitable and adequate and I will do all I can, within the framework of the general rules, to help resolve difficulties faced by any group in seeking to establish such school.
