Vol. 335 No. 4

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

790.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange for the immediate payments of unemployment assistance to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

The person concerned claimed unemployment benefit but following the completion of inquiries it was established that he did not fulfil the statutory contribution conditions and his claim had to be refused. The person concerned subsequently claimed unemployment assistance and his case has been referred to a social welfare officer for investigation of his means. As soon as all the necessary inquiries are finalised his entitlement to unemployment assistance will be determined expeditiously.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange for the immediate payment of a widow's pension to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

The person concerned whose husband died on 10 March 1982 claimed widow's pension on 5 April 1982. She has been awarded a contributory widow's pension, at the maximum rate appropriate to a widow with three qualified children, with effect from 23 April 1982.

Two pension books (one for herself and one for the children) containing orders from 4 June 1982 have been issued to the designated post office for collection by her and she was notified accordingly. The arrears of pension due for the period from 23 April to 3 June 1982 were paid direct to the widow by means of a payable order.

As her husband had been in receipt of disability benefit at the time of his death, payment continued to be due for six weeks afterwards and she did not, therefore, become entitled to widow's pension until this period had expired. The six weeks payment of disability benefit has been made to her by cheque.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange for the payment of a maternity grant to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

In March 1981 the person concerned claimed a maternity grant on her husband's insurance in respect of her confinement in December 1980 and a cheque for £8 was issued on 19 March 1981. It has been ascertained however that this cheque has not been cashed and a replacement cheque has now been issued.
