Vol. 336 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford-Cork Road.

13.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that the section of the main Waterford-Cork road passing through Youghal town has been closed to heavy goods vehicles for some months past, that this closure entails a major detour for such vehicles involving a heavy extra cost and that in one particular case alone involving Waterford Co-Operative Society this extra cost has amounted to between £80,000 and £100,000; and if he will endeavour to have the road in question re-opened as soon as possible.

(Dublin South-East): The Deputy will appreciate that such arrangements fall to be made by the local authorities concerned. I understand that the main streets of Youghal have been partially closed while a combined sewerage and water supply scheme is carried out. This work has necessitated traffic diversions in order that the contractor can work without undue interference. From 1 June next until September 1982 work on the main streets will be discontinued and they will be re-opened to traffic for the summer season. Work on the schemes will be confined to the side streets in this period. I am advised that the traffic diversion, while difficult, does not put any significant extra distance on through traffic.

Is the Minister aware that the latter part of his reply is not correct and that there is a major detour for heavy vehicles?

(Dublin South-East): Yes, but my information is that while it is difficult it does not involve undue extra distance for through traffic. I am prepared to see if the situation can be further eased.

I appreciate that.
