asked the Minister for Defence the approximate cost of an army overcoat, beret, boots and `combat' type tunic and trousers; and the amount spent on FCA clothing in each of the last five years and the total spend on the FCA itself.

The information is as follows: (a) The approximate cost of an army overcoat, beret, boots and combat type tunic and trousers is currently £98.00. (b) The total expenditure on FCA clothing in each of the last five years was: 1977, £213,380; 1978, £315,960; 1979, £315,770; 1980, £394,490; 1981, £720,880. (c) The total expenditure on FCA pay, allowances and clothing in each of the last five years was: 1977, £3,077,380; 1978, £3,805,960; 1979, £4,875,770; 1980, £6,071,490; 1981, £9,100,880.

Separate cost figures are not available for the FCA in respect of other items such as foodstuffs, transport, defensive equipment and laundry services.
