Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Garda Stations Strength.

969.

asked the Minister for Justice when it is envisaged that the Garda strength in Santry, Coolock, Whitehall and Clontarf Garda stations, Dublin, will be increased; and by how many persons in each case.

970.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí stationed in (a) Coolock and (b) Raheny Garda Stations, Dublin; and the plans to increase the number in these stations.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 969 and 970 together.

The detailed deployment of members of the force is a matter to be decided primarily by the Garda authorities and the strength assigned to the various stations is reviewed from time to time to take account of changing needs and circumstances. The strength at Coolock and Raheny stations on 21 June 1982 was 80 and 50, respectively.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in the period from 16 April 1982, when a number of newly-trained recruits took up duty, to 21 June 1982 an additional ban-garda was assigned to Whitehall station, the strength at Coolock station was increased by one sergeant and three gardaí and the strength at Raheny station by two ban-ghardaí.

The Garda authorities are not in a position at present to provide for any further increases in strength at any of the five stations mentioned in the questions but the needs of the areas will be reviewed according as additional manpower currently in training becomes available for assignment.
