The matter has been resolved so far as my Department is concerned. The amount of income tax deducted from the salary of the person in question in December 1982 included arrears of tax which arose as a result of the readjustment of her tax-free allowance by the Revenue Commissioners.
My Department is obliged to deduct tax on the basis of the most recent statement of tax-free allowances issued and any consequent arrears of tax have to be deducted accordingly.
