asked the Minister for Justice the number of prison places available in Ireland for (a) adult male, (b) adult female, (c) juvenile male and (d) juvenile female offenders; and the occupancy rate of such places during the past three years.

Limerick East): The table below indicates the categories which each institution caters for, the number of cells (where appropriate) and the daily average number in custody during the past three years. The figures given for 1982 are provisional.

*Some cells in each "closed" prison and in St. Patrick's are considerably larger than average and have always been regarded as "multiple cells". The study-bedrooms in the training unit are intended for single occupancy and are occupied on that basis.

asked the Minister for Justice the annual cost of the Exchequer per prison place for (a) adult male, (b) adult female, (c) juvenile male and (d) juvenile female offenders for the most recent year for which figures are available.

Limerick East): Separate costings for these categories are not available as one or more of the categories may be detained in the same institution. Costings for each institution can be made. The Finance Branch of my Department are at present in the process of transferring to new accommodation, and on that account, it has not been possible to have the necessary calculations done in time for today. I will forward the information to the Deputy as soon as possible.
