Vol. 341 No. 1

Written Answers . - Work Permit Extension .

544.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will consider the extension of a work permit for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1 on a more long-term basis, say a minimum of two years, given the significant contribution made by this person to the Dublin Corporation urban renewal programme.

: In considering applications for work permits under the Aliens Act, 1935, the Aliens Orders, 1946 and 1975 and the EEC Regulations, 1977, I have regard to the availability of Irish/EEC nationals for the position on offer and to the need to safeguard employment opportunities for Irish/EEC nationals within the country.

An application for an extension for one year of the work permit in question was received in January 1983. A permit was issued for one month to allow continuation of employment while the application was examined. It became apparent that a number of Irish nationals who might be suitable for the post were registered with the National Manpower Service. Following an exchange of correspondence, Dublin Corporation were notified that upon receipt of the £50 fee, a permit for the period to end May 1983 would issue. To date the fee has not been received.

In view of the availability of Irish nationals and the present serious unemployment situation, I believe I would not be justified in approving a further extension of the work permit beyond end May.
