asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

: It is expected that service will be provided for the person named within about two months.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be repaired for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin as it has been out of order since October 1982.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones which were out of order in the Swords exchange area of County Dublin at the end of October 1982; and the number that are still out of order.

: At the end of October 1982 some 4,000 subscribers lines were out of order in the Swords area because of interruption of service on main underground cables caused by flooding. At present there are 17 subscribers lines out of order and these are having attention.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin; and if this will be expedited having regard to the fact that she has been waiting for upwards of six years for service and that lines in the area have been allocated to other applicants.

: Service will be provided as soon as possible for the person named but it is unlikely that the necessary engineering work can be completed before the latter part of this year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin; and if this will be expedited having regard to the fact that his Department raised the initial charge with him in January 1983 and a substantial deposit has been paid since then.

: When the person named was invited to sign an agreement and make advance payment it was expected that telephone service would be provided within about three months. Regrettably this was not possible because of an unforeseen difficulty. It is expected that service will be provided within about two months.

: It is expected that service will be provided for the person named within about a year. My Department have no record of the payment of fees.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if applicants for telephone service are now receiving service within five months of applying in the Whitehall exchange area of Dublin 9, in view of the fact that a person (details supplied) was recently provided with service within five months of first making an application.

: Telephone service is not generally available in Whitehall exchange area within five months of date of application. Telephone service is provided when the necessary enginerring plant is available. In the case of the person named necessary plant to serve the address was available and service was provided.

: The school named has telephone service.

It has not been possible to provide an additional line applied for in November 1980 because of the volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the 01 area. It is expected that the additional telephone line will be provided within about a year.

: The person named has telephone service. It has not been possible to provide additional lines, applied for on 27 August 1981, because of the volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the 01 area. It is expected that the additional lines will be provided within about a year.

: A removal of service will be provided for the person named as soon as possible but it is unlikely that the necessary engineering work will be completed for about a year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has completed negotiations on staffing arrangements for the new telephone exchange in Galway; and if all the Departmental staff are receiving the appropriate allowance for transferring them.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the continuing delay in opening the new telephone exchange in Galway; and if he will give a definite date on which the exchange will come into operation.

: I propose to take Questions Nos. 629 and 630 together.

Negotiations on staffing arrangements for the new telephone exchange at Galway are virtually completed and the staff involved will receive the appropriate allowance for transfer.

Commissioning of the new telephone exchange is scheduled to take place on the 28th of this month. The delay arose because of technical difficulties encountered with the new Galway-Dublin radio link.

It has been expected that the necessary work would be completed earlier. Regrettably this was not possible due to the necessity to divert staff to other urgent work.
