Vol. 342 No. 1

Written Answers. - PAYE Revenue.

705.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate in relation to the £1,739 million to be raised this year in income tax, the amount that will come from the PAYE sector and the amount that will be contributed by workers earning in excess of £10,000 per annum.

The yield of income tax in 1983 from the PAYE sector is estimated at £1,472 million.

As regards the amount that will be contributed by workers earning in excess of £10,000 per annum the statistics available at the present time are provisional figures for the year 1980-81 which show that £240 million in tax out of a total of £810 million was payable by PAYE income earners with total income in excess of £10,000 per annum. Total income is gross income less superannuation contributions, interest relief, medical insurance relief and allowable expenses.

The figure of £1,472 million refers to all tax collected under the PAYE system and, therefore, refers to more than ordinary wage and salary earners. For example, it includes the tax payable by directors of close companies and tax on investment income, and so on, collected under PAYE by restricting tax-free allowances.
