Vol. 342 No. 5

Written Answers. - Co-disposal of Industrial Waste.

456.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a proposal from the Irish Waste Contractors Federation suggesting the concept of co-disposal of industrial waste between local authorities and the private sector etc.; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I take it that the Deputy is referring to a letter which was widely circulated to public representatives by the Irish Waste Contractors Federation recently. I am fully aware of the need for improved disposal facilities for industrial waste. My Department have taken up with local authorities the need to provide adequate land-fill facilities for the disposal of industrial as well as other wastes arising in their areas and have issued detailed advice on the wastes which are suitable for co-disposal and the precautions which must be taken on environmental grounds in the selection, design and management of co-disposal tipheads. The importance of developing co-operation between local authorities and the private sector in this matter has also been consistently emphasised in circulars issued by my Department.
