Vol. 343 No. 10

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

666.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate the telephone accounts received by a person (details supplied) in Dublin which he states are greatly in excess of the amount due as fewer telephone calls have been made from his home than the number for which he has been billed; the nature of the investigation conducted by his Department into the complaints; and if no action will be taken to discontinue the telephone service made available at this address until the matter has been satisfactorily resolved.

The accounts in this case have been re-checked and found to be correct as issued. The meter and associated equipment were also checked and no fault was found which would cause over-recording.

As a full investigation has now been carried out payment of the outstanding amount of £74.80 should be made in order to ensure continuance of service.

667.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be restored to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3, as it has been out of order for over six weeks.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the telephone kiosk in Baconstown, Enfield, County Meath, will be erected.

The provision of a public telephone kiosk at Baconstown, Enfield, is not regarded as warranted at present and it is not proposed therefore to provide one there.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones that will be installed in 1983; and when telephones will be made available on demand.

It is expected that between 70,000 and 75,000 telephones will be connected in 1983.

Telephones are already available on demand in many areas of the country. The position will improve gradually until service will be available on demand throughout the country by about the end of 1984.

672.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephone applications in (a) the Dublin area; (b) the rest of the country; and (c) the Dublin 12 area.

(a) 46,000; (b) 24,000; (c) The information is not readily available. However, it may help the Deputy to know that Dublin 12 area is served largely by Walkinstown exchange and that there are some 3,000 applications outstanding in the Walkinstown exchange area.

673.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a public telephone kiosk will be erected at Glenesheen, Ardpatrick, County Limerick.

It had been planned to provide a kiosk at Glenesheen, Ardpatrick. However the programme for the provision of rural kisoks is under review in the light of the financial position generally and it is not possible at this stage to say when a kiosk will be provided at the location in question.

675.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when Cong telephone exchange, County Galway, will become automatic.

The conversion of Cong telephone exchange to automatic working is dependent on the prior provision of a new digital trunk switching exchange at Castlebar, for which a major building extension is required.

The Office of Public Works expect to place a contract shortly for the necessary building, construction of which will take 12 months. On this basis it seems unlikely that conversion of Cong exchange can be effected until about the end of next year.

679.
