There is a burial ground on Abbey Island within the area of Derrynane National Historic Park. Representations have been received over the years for an extension of this burial ground but on 24 March 1982 Kerry County Council informed the Commissioners of Public Works that "the remainder of the Abbey Island, where the present burial ground is situated, is virtually all solid rock and is completely unsuitable for burial ground purposes". Accordingly the proposal to extend the burial ground cannot be regarded as a practical one.
There are no surplus lands within the area of the National Historic Park that could be made available for development as a burial ground.
