Vol. 343 No. 11

Written Answers. - Dublin Inner City.

647.

asked the Minister for the Gaeltacht if he will outline actions and policies being pursued at present or to be pursued in the near future by his Department to alleviate or deal with any aspect of the difficulties confronting the socially and economically disadvantaged area of the inner city of Dublin, north of the River Liffey; and if he will give details of the proposed timetable in respect of any such initiative, and the amounts of moneys, including grants, subsidies or other resources which arise in this regard.

Níl baint ag mo Roinnse leis an gceantar sin ach amháin sa mhéid go mbeadh tairbhe le fáil sa cheantar as gníomhaíochtaí a bhíonn ar siúl ag Bord na Gaeilge agus eagrais eile le cabhair airgid na Roinne, chun an Ghaeilge agus an cultúr dúchais a chur chun cinn.

asked the Minister for Transport if he will outline actions and policies being pursued at present or to be pursued in the near future by his Department to alleviate or deal with any aspect of the difficulties confronting the socially and economically disadvantaged area of the inner city of Dublin, north of the River Liffey; and if he will give details of the proposed timetable in respect of any such initiative, and the amounts of moneys, including grants, subsidies or other resources which arise in this regard.

My Department are not currently pursuing any actions or policies of the kind mentioned by the Deputy. Two transport projects will, however, have some impact on the inner city, for example, the electrification of the Howth-Bray railway line which will come into full operation in 1984 and the CIE bus replacement programme which was introduced in 1981. Both lead to improvements in rail and road access to and from the city centre. The total cost of the electrification amounts to £115 million approximately and this year £36 million has been allocated for that project. So far nearly £70 million has been allocated to the renewal of CIE's bus fleet including £16 million this year for road passenger projects.
