Vol. 344 No. 3

Written Answers. - National School Improvements.

915.

asked the Minister for Education whether financial provision has been made in the 1983 Estimates for repair work to be carried out at Clonbur national school, Connemara, County Galway; and, if so, if she will make a statement on the matter.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Deputy Máire Geoghegan-Quinn's question of 31 May 1983. The report furnished by the Commissioners of Public Works on the question of repairs to Clonbur national school, Connemara, County Galway is still being considered by my Department. A grant cannot be sanctioned until my Department's consideration of the commissioners' report has been completed. However, the Deputy may be assured that a grant will be sanctioned towards the cost of necessary repairs.

With regards to financial provision in the 1983 Estimates for the cost of such work as may be deemed to be necessary, capital funds for primary schools are not allocated in this manner. It would not be practicable to do so because of the large number of projects and the wide range of works involved.

asked the Minister for Education the plans she has to carry out essential improvement works to Kilbrittain and Borleign national schools, County Cork.

The national schools at Kilbrittain and Borleigh, County Cork, are vested in the Minister for Education. Therefore, the maintenance of the school buildings and grounds are the responsibility of the Commissioners of Public Works. I understand from the commissioners that they propose to attend to the external decoration of Kilbrittain school and to various works to the grounds of Borleigh school.
